What is Red Light Therapy?

It is not a trend. But it’s also not magic. Red light therapy — sometimes called photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to trigger biological processes inside your cells. The most studied mechanism involves the mitochondria, the part of your cells responsible for producing energy. When exposed to the right wavelengths, mitochondria respond by ramping up cellular energy production and reducing oxidative stress.

What does that mean in practice? Depending on the device, the protocol, and the person, people use red light therapy for skin health, muscle recovery, joint pain, inflammation, and more. Some of those applications are backed by solid clinical research. Others are early-stage or overhyped. We’ll always tell you which is which.

There are thousands of peer-reviewed studies on photobiomodulation — it’s one of the more thoroughly researched areas in non-pharmaceutical wellness. That said, not all applications are equally proven. We cite real sources so you can judge for yourself.
